Top 5 3PL Industry Trends to Watch in 2025

As businesses navigate an increasingly complex global supply chain landscape, third-party logistics (3PL) providers have to step up to address evolving challenges and opportunities. Here are the top 5 3PL industry trends to watch in 2025 (and what you should be looking for if you’re considering partnering with a 3PL):

1. Artificial Intelligence (AI): Worth It?

AI seems to be the talk of every industry’s future, and the 3PL industry is no different. Based on what we’ve seen so far, It’s certainly something to keep an eye on, but it has not been refined to the point where it can take over operations without heavy human oversight. It’s been known to make costly errors, and a shipping error could negatively impact a 3PL client’s bottom line. At this point, it’s not worth the risk.

We regularly review disaster recovery and redundancy plans to ensure that in the event of warehouse technology going down, our staff would be able to conduct all standard operations which not many 3PLs can say nowadays.

2. Accelerated Shipping Times: Meeting Customer Expectations

The rise of e-commerce within the past 5 years has heightened consumer expectations for fast and reliable delivery, which will only continue in 2025. Having warehouse space within close proximity to where the final product needs to be shipped is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity.

In our case, we can ship to nearly the entire northeastern United States in a day or less. It’s one of the many advantages of being located in Albany, NY.

3. Evolving Regulations

Regulatory changes are always a concern in the logistics sector. Any compliance and policy changes make waves in the industry, but the word on everyone’s mind for 2025 is “tariffs.” The current political climate is setting up logistics providers and businesses that rely heavily on imports for a tumultuous year. This could translate into increased costs for transportation, even longer wait times at ports, and a scramble for price reductions and cost savings on other logistics services.

Additionally, unions and strikes can greatly impact the industry. When union strikes occurred in 2024, the average person may not have felt the impact, but they made a huge impact on the entire supply chain, substantially increasing the amount of time it took for a product to get to its final destination and costing businesses billions of dollars.

4. Mergers and Acquisitions: Consolidation Continues

The 3PL and transportation industries are seeing a wave of consolidation as companies aim to expand their capabilities and geographic reach.

In 2025, we can expect to see the trend continue of smaller, specialized 3PLs and carriers being acquired by larger players to diversify their service offerings.

While the bigger players are viable options, a smaller 3PL company can provide you with a much higher level of customer service due to the sheer size of the larger companies. To us, your business is top-priority, whereas with a larger company you’re just another number.

5. Change is not the same as Progress

Since the industry started, there have been many trends that have come and gone, some successful and others not. 3PL owners, or businesses doing their own fulfillment, have made frantic changes to try to stay ahead of the curve.

At Stone, we bring every new process back to one guiding principle; how will this make logistics easy for our customers? I encourage companies to proceed with caution on changes that deviate from core values and not be afraid to hang back on the sidelines of “industry trends” that may need more time to work out the balance of technology and customer service.
